Introduction to marine data science

Please register for the course via Studentportalen, Ladok på web.

Course information:

This is a practical course where you learn and review basic mathematical and statistical methods, and start developing the programming skills necessary for marina data analysis. The course has three components, which run together throughout the course: Basic mathematics (1.5 hp - English), Basic programming (1.5 hp - English), and Grundläggande Statistik (4.5 hp - Swedish). Both the mathematics and programming parts of the course are taught in English as you will find that 99% of the resources available for these are also in English. It also helps to learn the terminology early and will really help you in your independent study. You are of course welcome to study in Swedish if you so wish.

The schedule available on TimeEdit provides an overview of the time and location for lectures and exercises as part of MAV102. Any changes in the schedule will be announced by the course leader both during lectures and published on the CANVAS page. You're expected to work about 40 hours per week on this course. The content is a mix of lectures and exercises, mostly at the start of the week and independent work. You should use the open time slots during weekdays for self-study going over the course material.

Lectures are not compulsory to attend, however they are thoroughly recommended as the pace will be fast. The lectures are intended to deepen and provide perspective on the topics covered by the course, as well as to facilitate the learning of the teaching material. At the lectures, we will also present the compulsory assignments. Students are expected to work through the teaching material that the schedule describes, as well as actively participate in the lectures and ask questions about the elements that need to be clarified.

Attendance to all practical and group exercises is compulsory to pass the course.

Leave from compulsory elements is not normally granted unless for a valid reason.

A (G) grade is required to pass the course.

Contact the course leader, Bastien Queste (bastien.queste@gu.se) if you have any questions.

Enjoy!
