Course syllabus

Warmly welcome to the course Literary Writing in Exile!

We very much look forward of meeting you in a course introduction on zoom on September the 6th at 13.00

On these course pages in Canvas you will find all the information you need to follow the course in the modules (in the menu to your left). In the modules you find the course schedule and reading list, as well as information about each scheduled meeting and the assignments. It is very important you read the information in each module and note the deadlines for the assignments.

In the course syllabus you find the learning goals for this course and a basic description of it. This course give 15 university credits, and runs on 50% of a full time course, which means it is planned to take up about that amount of time. In the course description there is a more detailed introduction to the course with descriptions on what it contains and how the learning goals are being examined.

You will meet on zoom almost every Friday afternoon throughout the fall semester, and in the end of the course the group will meet in Gothenburg for a two day-seminar when you close read and respond to each other's texts together (assignment 4).

This course is divided into three general themes: 1) Startingpoints 2) Reading, sharing, translating 3) Image, text, memory.

In this course there will be four assignments, as well as some reading and preparations for the seminars. In the learning activities there is an emphasis on learning as a work done collectively, where we value our differences and are curious about each other perspectives, thoughts and experiences. We want the course to be a place to explore the theme of writing in exile and try new things - different writing methods, reading practices and theories - together. So, a lot of the work is done through group discussions and seminars, collaborative artistic experiments but also in individual writing assignments and reading. All used as tools for learning and for exploring what it is to write literature in exile - and how it can be done.

The course combines practical knowledge and skills with learning from theory and the experience of others - through literature, critical questioning and conversation, photography and art - to reach for and create new knowledge and new artistic works.

Daniel Gustafsson is the main teacher of this course. He is a writer and translator, primarily of works written in Hungarian. He has also worked at Översättarcentrum (the Translators’ Centre) and at the Swedish Institute and he is a part of the curating team behind Stockholms Litteraturmässa.

Sofia Gräsberg is the course responsible, and will mainly join in during the introduction of the course but will be here in the background to guide and support you if you have any questions or concerns regarding your studies.

Among the modules in the left menu you find the schedule and literature list for the course. In the list, some is required reading for seminars and some are voluntary for you to read; texts we have chosen to in order to support and deepen your learning on the topic of Literary writing in Exile. These works are also partners in our conversation.

It is the second time we give this course and we have done some alterations from last year, based on the student's feedback and our own experience - but to some extent it is still an experiment we invite you do together with us and each other; where we explore what literary writing in exile is and what it can become; what it means and can mean; to you, to us as a group - and in society at large.

Again welcome to this course!

And if you have questions before the course starts please write sofia.grasberg@akademinvaland.gu.se
