WELCOME to the Course BIO451 Experimental marine ecology V25!
Please register at Student Portal, Ladok on line (at least one week before the start of the course)
Course information
In this course you will get a "tool box" containing all you need to know to run a scientific experiment. The course starts with a theoretical part including an overview of hypothesis testing, experimental design, and statistics. The second part of the course is a group project where you will work independently on a research question under supervision. In the last two weeks, you will practise your writing skills by writing a report of the group work in the form of a scientific paper (this is done individually).
The course runs between March 26 and June 5. The major part of the course (March 30 to May 22) will take place at Tjärnö marine laboratory. There will be a break for Easter (April 3-6). The last two weeks (May 25 to June 5) will be devoted to distance teaching. There will not be any teaching in Gothenburg.
The roll-call will take place at Tjärnö at 11:30 on Monday March 30.
Accommodation at Tjärnö is free, but there is a cost for the food (including breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays, but excluding dinner on Fridays and days before the Easter holiday and May 1). If you stay during weekends or holidays, you must arrange your own food. There is a small kitchen in the facility that you can use. During your stay, you will share room with other students. Please bring bed linnen and towels, as well as warm and waterproof clothing. The course involves a lot of field work!
If you have special food requirements (vegetarian/vegan or any allergies), contact Gunilla Toth at gunilla.toth@marine.gu.se minimally two weeks prior to the course start (March 17).
Teachers on the course are:
Gunilla Toth (gunilla.toth@gu.se), Mats Lindegarth (mats.lindegarth@marine.gu.se), Swantje Enge (swantje.enge@marine.gu.se), Teresa Peil (teresa.peil@gu.se), Gabriella Malmqvist (gabriella.malmqvist@gu.se), and Cruise Speck (cruise.speck@gu.se).
English is the official language of the course. This means that all information, literature, lectures, seminars, presentations, and written reports will be in English.
Literature (not compulsory) - Hofmann AH (2019) Scientific writing and communication. 4th edition. Oxford University Press. ISBN: 9780190063283
And additional material handed out by the teachers or published under "Modules" here on Canvas.
