How we use Canvas

On this canvas site, we will mainly use three of the tabs on the left hand tool bar: Modules, Assignments, and Announcements.

On the Modules tab, each week has its own page where you see what is happening each week. You should check these regularly and in advance of each scheduled session. This is the most up-to-date information and where any changes are made.

The Assignments tab shows the assignments you have to do for this course, and how and when you have to submit them.

The Announcements tab is where we share information about events, lectures, gigs etc. that may be of interest to attend. We also use this for urgent announcements about the course.

The Course Evaluations tab is used at the end of the course where you are asked to complete an anonymous form about your experience of taking this course. This helps us develop our work for future students.

*All email communication to and from teachers in the course occurs through Canvas and your GU email account*

Student Portal

The University's Student Portal gathers information and services for you as a student and you will find
information that is specific to students at HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design.

Study Counselling

If you have questions about your studies, educational support, approved study leave, entry requirements, etc. you are welcome to contact the study counsellor at HDK-Valand Britta Fernell Foufa, studievagledning@hdk-valand.gu.se. Find more information about Study counselling at the University of Gothenburg on the Student Portal.

Student Health

It is important that you are feeling well and that you feel that you can manage your studies. You can contact the student health service and there are also various resources that you can use on your own. Read more about student health in the Student Portal.

If you are receiving CSN from the Swedish government, be aware of your responsibility to report sickness that is preventing your ability to study, and when you must support this with medical certification. Check the information on Försäkringskassan in English or Swedish.

Sustainable Student Life

There is an open course room in Canvas for all students at the University of Gothenburg called Courses for a sustainable study life. There is a stress management course and recorded webinars on, for example, ergonomics and procrastination. There are also several recorded lectures on study techniques. The material is available in Swedish and English and is always accessible.

Guidelines for the use of Generative AI

A formal policy is currently being developed by HDK-Valand and when that happens this information will be updated. The statement below currently regulates how Generative AI (G-AI) may be used within the framework of the MFA Fine Art programme.

We understand G-AI as a learning tool. As a programme we recognise there is a lot of possibility and potential in working with G-AI within the context of an artistic research practice. While we welcome transparent engagement with G-AI, we do have some guidelines.

G-AI Guidelines:

  • Regarding written assignments, such as essays or enquiry statements, G-AI can be used to check English academic vocabulary, spelling and grammar. You can also use software such as ChatGPT to ask questions about how to structure or arrange your text and to gain further knowledge on a particular topic. If you use knowledge produced by G-AI in your writing, you must cite it. Be aware that G-AI can be inaccurate and provide false information.

How to cite an G-AI source:

  • Give the name of the engine used (eg. Chat-GPT), the input / question used, and the date of the enquiry.

You are not permitted to feed G-AI software descriptions of your examination assignments and submit an AI attempt as your own work. It is evident to us as educators when students submit G-AI produced work as their own and 100% of the time it is not well articulated or compelling.

If you are using AI within your practice enquiry, we expect you to be discussing this usage with your teachers and peers during teaching moments. It should be a transparent artistic process that you are bringing forward in tutorials, crit sessions etc.

If you are unsure around G-AI use and wish to check or discuss a specific usage please contact the relevant course responsible or supervisor.
