Course syllabus
Welcome to HKMK11 Method and Context within Craft!
This course, KHMK11 Method and Context within Craft (30 hp) is an introduction to the Master’s Programme in Crafts – Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art. The course activities will start on 2nd September 2024 and end on 19th January 2025.
The main focus of this course is to introduce basic tools and concepts of an inquiry-based craft practice, which aid to design and conduct independent artistic studio practice throughout the master study. There are three mandatory sub-courses that run parallel during this course:
1. Introduction to Inquiry Based Artistic Practice: Methods (Introduktion till utforskande konstnärlig praktik: metoder), 15 credits.
From 2nd September 2024 to 28th October 2024.
2. Introduction to Inquiry Based Artistic Practice: Experiment (Introduktion tillutforskande konstnärlig praktik: experiment), 7.5 credits. From 30th October 2024 to 9th December 2024.
3. Introduction to Inquiry Based Artistic Practice: Theory (Introduktion till utforskandekonstnärlig praktik: teori), 7.5 credits
From 20th September 2024 to 10th January 2025.

Mon 2nd September
10.00 – 12.00 Welcome to HDK-Valand with Head of department Klara Björk in 'Baulan', the library space just in front of you as you enter the HDK building located at Kristinelundsgatan 6-8.
13.00 School tour with MA2 students: Marie, Shen, and Klara. You will meet them at the main entrance of HDK. At the end of the tour you will be taken to your studios. You might also find this map of the campus useful.
Tue 3rd September
9.00 – 10.00 Introduction to HDK with Hans Ekelund in room 505 'Krokisalen'.
10.30 – 12.00 Introduction to Master Studies with Lina Peterson and Åsa Dybwad Norman in room 505 'Krokisalen'.
13.00 – 14.30 Safety Introduction and Introduction to IT with Arild Hanssen and Emanuel Cederkvist in room 347, Computer suite.
17.00 Pizza night! Get-together with all students and staff in the HDK Canteen area. Pizza will be provided, bring your own drink.
Wed 4th September
All day: Subject specific activities.
Jewellery: We'll meet at 10.30 in room 242c. Introductions and workshop. In the afternoon we'll be having tea/coffee together and we ask that you as MA1 students co-ordinate to bring some biscuits or buns as a contribution. Hot drinks will be provided.
Textiles: 9:00-9:45 Meeting with Åsa and MA2 Textile in the MA studio. 10:00-16:00 Fiberworkshop, the whole textile department meet for teacher presentations and workshop. Please bring (for the workshop that starts after lunch): scissors, glue gun, tape, paper, yarn, pens etc
Ceramics: 9.30 -16.00. Meet in room 527. Please prepare a short (5 min) presentation as a powerpoint of pdf where you show images of who you are and your previous work.

9.00 – 12.00 Master Presentations with Lina Petersson in room 338 'Stora Hörsalen'. MA1 and MA2 Master students in Craft present their ongoing projects and/or plans for this year, teachers and fellow students from BA Craft are welcome to join!
Task to complete by Thursday 5th September
Prepare a four to five-minute presentation of your work using a slide show tool, such as PowerPoint, and save as a PDF document. Remember to reduce the file size. Please send your presentation as a PDF to Lina lina.peterson.2@gu.se by Thursday September 5, noon the latest (12:00 AM). There will be a computer available on the day to present from.
Show 3-5 slides - mainly image based, responding to the following four questions:
- What is your artistic background(s)?
- What have you been working on (artistic practices) until now?
- What work do you hope to develop at HDK Valand during your master studies?
- Show one picture of an artistic reference that's important to you.

Try to make a habit of reading 20 mins to one hour every day. Some of the reading assignments are quite large and it's not possible to catch up on reading last minute.
