Welcome to KTH300 Theory and History of Cultural Care, 7.5 credits H24
The course deals with a central knowledge area for the subject of cultural preservation and introduces basic concepts and theoretical issues within the subject area from a historical and international perspective. The focus is on developments during the 18th and 20th centuries with views backwards and forwards in time. Cultural preservation doctrines in the form of international declarations, conventions and conservation ethics documents are highlighted and discussed.
After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Describe and explain central cultural preservation concepts found in the literature
- Reproduce the main features of the professional history of cultural conservation
- Give examples of the relationship between cultural preservation and a wider field of environmental and sustainability issues in a historical perspective.
- Apply concepts and historical perspectives to cultural conservation tasks to identify and critically process professional issues.
- Identify, give examples of and critically process conservation and cultural preservation ethical issues in real situations.
- Describe and analyze the relationship between scientific knowledge and cultural preservation stances.
Course Description (English)
The course will be held both in Swedish and English.
The course addresses a central area of knowledge in the field of cultural heritage conservation, introducing fundamental concepts and theoretical issues from a historical and international perspective. The focus is on developments during the 18th and 19th centuries, with references both backward and forward in time. Cultural heritage doctrines, in the form of international declarations, conventions, and conservation ethics documents, are highlighted and discussed.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Describe and explain central cultural heritage conservation concepts found in the literature.
- Outline the main features of the professional history of cultural heritage conservation.
- Provide examples of the relationship between cultural heritage conservation and the broader field of environmental and sustainability issues from a historical perspective.
- Apply concepts and historical perspectives to cultural heritage conservation tasks to identify and critically address professional issues.
- Identify, exemplify, and critically address conservation and cultural heritage ethical problems in real situations.
- Describe and analyze the relationship between scientific knowledge and cultural heritage conservation decisions.
The course includes a field study component, a study trip to Rome.

Grading: The course is awarded with one of the following grades: Distinction (VG), Passed (G) and Failed (U). On exam part 1 and 2, one of the grades Pass (G) or Fail (U) is given. In exam part 3, one of the grades Distinction (VG), Passed (G) or Failed (U) is given.
Re-exam: If you need to take a re-exam, you need to contact the course manager for the course you are taking the exam for and register for the re-exam.
Pedagogical support: All students at the University of Gothenburg must have the prerequisites to pass their studies. Educational support is available for those who have a permanent documented disability. Link to information:
NAIS: It is the student's responsibility to inform the course supervisor whether the student has a NAIS certificate and what this means for adjustment in the examination. The last day to inform the coordinators is the beginning of the course. To apply for a certificate, you as a student need to fill in a form. You can get the form from the study counselor ( svl@conservation.gu.se ). The students need to inform the course coordinators also if they informed them in past courses. Without this information, no adjustments can be done for the students.
