Welcome to KKV221 Conservation of Inorganic Materials 1, 7.5 hp H24
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the conservation of historical objects and surfaces composed of (mainly) inorganic materials. Special emphasis will be put on stone, wall paintings and plasters. The course will consist of lectures, site visits, and practical work in the lab and on site.
The course will discuss original materials and techniques, material properties, deterioration mechanisms and explore how these are linked and affect the condition of an object and thus its conservation. A number of conservation methods will be discussed in theory, and this will be followed by practical demonstrations to learn basic methods.
The practical part of the course makes up of ca. 50% of the whole course, and it focuses on: observation and documentation of real objects and their original technique and state of conservation; replication of some original techniques; application of selected specific conservation measures, with the aim of developing a critical methodological approach as well as practical skills.
The course emphasises a holistic understanding of the approach to conservation and the application of theory to effective practice.
There are two examinations in this course (as per syllabus):
Exam part 1: Seminars and practical exercises 3.5 credits
Exam part 2: Individual written assignment 4 credits
NB: The practical work on site is functional to the exams and it is compulsory.
You will be able to read more information about the course and the exam elements in the syllabus and the course guide (course guide to be finalised).
Please note that there may be changes in the schedule due to unforeseen events. In such cases, you will be informed via Canvas as soon as possible.
NB: The students holding a NAIS certificate need to inform the course responsible two weeks before the course starts; the last day to inform the course responsible is the day the course starts.
The students need to inform the course coordinator also if they informed them in past courses. Without this information, no adjustments can be done for the students.
