Course syllabus
The 22.5 credit course DMA11A Relational Practice act as an introduction to design as understood at the MFA Design programme at HDK-Valand. You will be introduced to the different workshops that will support your material practices and meet each other: designers with different backgrounds, experiences and outlooks. You will meet staff, teachers and researchers, also with different skills, knowledge and intuitions but with a shared sense of urgency to explore the role and potentialities of design practice. In Relational Practice you start to build the foundation that will support your design practice the coming two years, and beyond.
The purpose of this course is to articulate a design practice comprised of specific methods and knowledge perspectives, through the production of a body of work addressing relational dimensions of design. It is where you begin to unpack your knowledge in order to explore new modes, methods and approaches of practice. The course delves into the relational aspects of design in a series of collective activities in accordance with the theme Friendship. You will also meet the Röhsska museum of Design and Craft as an external partner. Relational Practice runs parallel with the 7.5 credit course Design Studies.
At the MFA Design program we understand and approach design as inherently relational. You will be asked to take on an explorative mode of practice. The concept of explorative practice can be understood as being brave, curious, testing, expanding, unsure, processual, open, not knowing where you will end up.
In this course you will meet teachers: Karin Linderoth, Eva Erwander, Jonas Fridén Kihl, Mattias Gunnarsson, Camilla Iliefski, Linda Holmer, Markus Bergström, Erika Henriksson, Pascal Prosek.
