Welcome to KGM700 Scientific Analytical Methods in Conservation, 7.5 credits 2024

The course is scheduled from 3th of October to 4th of November (50% study time).

This course will focus on the theoretical use of common analytical techniques used in conservation science:

  • Microscopy (polarized light microscopy, SEM-EDS)
  • X-ray based methods (radiography, diffraction, fluorescence and tomography)
  • Spectroscopy (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR and Raman)
  • Large-scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron methods)

Other techniques and their uses will also be briefly discussed. Additionally, sessions on sampling, research planning, and presenting data will be included.

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, and an independent study.

All lectures and seminars will be via Zoom (link to be provided).

Students will each choose at least one object for independent study to be presented in a written research plan.
