Welcome to MGH102 Quantitative and Qualitative Methods

GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
During the course both theoretical foundations and scientific implementations of research methods will be covered in lectures, seminars and workshops. The course begins with an outline of theory of science and qualitative methods, before moving on to quantitative methods, with a specific focus on epidemiology and biostatistics. The course will encompass training in practical competencies needed for the interpretation, assessment and implementation of quantitative research. In addition, ethical issues in research within the global health field will also be given attention.
ORGANIZATION OF THE COURSE
In order to meet the learning outcomes specified in the course plan, active full-time engagement is requested of you. This entails attendance and participation at lectures, active and prepared participation in seminars and computer sessions, as well as completion of the required assessments. Also, remember to allocate time for your own studies!
FORMS OF ASSESSMENT
- Two in-class written exams in qualitative and quantitative methods, respectively
- One in-class written computer-based exam in biostatistics
- Three mandatory seminars/assignments including written hand-ins
The grading scale comprises: Pass with Distinction (VG), Pass (G) and Fail (U). To Pass (G) the student must complete and pass all three exams and the mandatory seminars with attached hand-ins. To Pass with Distinction (VG) the student must qualify for a Pass and in addition obtain the level of Pass with Distinction on the exam in quantitative methods and on the computer-based exam in biostatistics.

Information for those of you who are planning to travel around Christmas: The last campus-based teaching before Christmas is scheduled on Friday Dec 19th, 9.15-12.00. We have teaching on-campus in week 2 (starting Monday Jan 5th) and mandatory sessions on campus in week 3.
This course is campus-based. However, in week 52 and week 1 the scheduled teaching will be online-only (via Zoom). Note that you also need to be available for group work during these weeks.
