ABOUT THE OPEN UP PROJECT

Open Up (OU) is a four-year long cultural project (2019-2023), co-funded by the Creative Europe programme that aims to bring to the surface and promote underrepresented artists, designers, craftspeople and performers located in the seven cities of the partner organisations.

The OPEN UP project website is accessible here.Links to an external site.

Under-representation is not thought of in a singular sense of ‘target community.’ Instead we are seeking to identify and respond to segregation effects within the organization of opportunities for creative arts work, both inside and outside our own organizations.

Open Up aims to establish socially, culturally and economically sustainable creative practices, by providing the participants with access to training and knowledge through the project’s various actions. The actions  include laboratories, workshops, and public events.

The project has a focus on the economic barriers, and on opportunities, for professional careers in the art, design, craft, and performing arts domain (we use ‘creative practices’ as a broad heading).

The city of Gothenburg shows a high level of socioeconomic (class) as well as racialized residential segregation. The city is, and remains significantly segregated along “class and colour” lines. This also appears in the higher education arrangements and work economies of creative practices. Hdk-Valand has previously worked with community-wide and self-organized initiatives such as River of Light. and the Support Group Network Links. to learn about its role in segregation and desegregation.

"LEARNING FROM THE RIVER OF LIGHT"

Drawing upon this history of relationship and cooperation experience, the programme actions of HDK-Valand Academy will attempt to support pathways to market, to publics, to opportunities and to self-organization among creative practitioners not well--served by current cultural infrastructures and processes.

"TEXTILES AND STORYTELLING"

The strand of activities will foreground intercultural learning and competencies and knowledge transfer in crafts. It will be supported by the Academy of Crafts and Design at Gothenburg University developed in collaboration with textile artists and practitioners form different traditions.
