Hello everyone,
and a warm welcome to MR2106 State, Market and Human Rights!
We hope and think this will be a very exciting course, both for you and for us. This is a new course that covers some very exciting issues and current frontiers in academic and policy debate.
We look forward to seeing you all at the first session on 1 November at 13:15. Bart will talk you through the design, focus and requirements of this course and there will be an opportunity to clarify any issues or questions that may have come up.
You will find an overview of all key dates in the schedule, but the most complete information is provided under the modules tab, which combines all key information (substance, logistics, links, etc) with a separate page for each session in one chronological sequence. This overview also clarifies the five-block structure of the course, Human Rights &: 1 Corporations; 2 Gender and Race; 3 Mobility; 4 Humanitarianism; 5 Legal Identity and insurgency.
Please note that attendance for most seminars in mandatory, more specifically: Sem I (9 nov), Sem II (10 Nov), Sem III (16 Nov), Sem V (30 Nov), Sem VI (14 Dec) and Sem VII (11-12 Jan). Missing any of these will require you to do a make-up assignment of some sort. Attendance of all other session is strongly encouraged of course.
This is an on-campus course, meaning that nearly all sessions will be held in an actual room with teacher/facilitators physically present. However, if you have any symptoms of a cold, flu or worse (in terms of infectious sickness), we ask you not to come to class. For this reason, we will do our best to facilitate the participation for those who are unable to join class. However, we do not have the means to offer a full-blown hybrid course.
There are 5 assignments that you will need to complete (though number 3 and 4 are connected). We will be strict about deadlines. Rather than facilitating a raft of extensions or late submission, we ask that those of you who simply don’t manage to submit on time (as sometimes happens, we understand), use the opportunity to do a re-take by 31 January. For an overview of grading schemes and weighing of components into the course grade, see here.
Finally, please note that we require you to submit a cover page for each assignment with details about the use (or non-use) of artificial intelligence (see here also for explanation).
We look forward to a lively and engaging course with you all.
